The conditions under which the piston works are very extreme, characterized by high pressure, high temperature and inertial loads. Therefore, the pistons on modern engines are made of lightweight, durable and heat-resistant materials - aluminum alloys, or less often steel. Komatsu pistons are manufactured in two ways - injection molding or stamping. Forged pistons can also be used, but this production method is extremely rare at present.

Komatsu pistons are one-piece structural elements, usually divided into a head (called a bottom in some sources) and a skirt. The shape and design of the piston largely depends on the type of engine, the shape of the combustion chamber and the combustion process taking place in it. In the piston head of a diesel engine there is a certain shape of the combustion chamber, which provides good swirl and improves the formation of the mixture.

Under the head of the Komatsu piston there are grooves for installing piston rings.

The piston is connected to the connecting rod by a piston pin, which is tubular and made of steel. There are various ways to install the piston pin. The most popular is a floating pin, which is able to rotate in the boss of the connecting rod and the piston head during operation. To prevent the pin from moving, it is fixed with a locking ring. Less common is to rigidly fasten the pin end in the piston or to rigidly fasten the pin in the piston head of the connecting rod.
